Post 9/11 Federal Pell Grant Provision: Dependents of a Soldier Killed in Action

If you are a dependent of a soldier killed in action in Iraq or Afghanistan since September 11, 2001 和 you are currently Federal Pell Grant eligible, you may be eligible for some additional Federal Pell Grant.

Because students who meet these conditions are not necessarily easily identifiable, please contact the Office of 金融援助 if you meet these conditions. We will evaluate 和 confirm your eligibility to determine whether you are eligible for more Federal Pell Grant.

的 2018 Consolidated Appropriations Act included an amendment authorizing the 阵亡英雄子女奖学金.  在这项奖学金下, a Pell-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer is eligible to receive a maximum Pell Grant for the award year for which the determination of eligibility is made.  才有资格获得这项奖学金, the student must be Pell-eligible 和 have a Pell eligible EFC (as determined through completion of the FAFSA & related requirements) 和 must be less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his/her parent’s or guardian’s death.  在随后的几年里, the student continues to be eligible for the scholarship, as long as the student has a Pell-eligible EFC 和 continues to be an eligible student.

For purposes of the 阵亡英雄子女奖学金, a public safety officer is:

• As defined in section 1204 of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control 和 Safe Streets Act of 1968 (42 U.S.C. 3796b); or

• 一名消防警察, defined as an individual who is serving in accordance with State or local law as an officially recognized or designated member of a legally organized public safety agency 和 provides scene security or directs traffic in response to any fire drill, 火灾报警, 或者其他火, 救援, 或者警察紧急事件, 或者在计划好的特别活动中.
